Face Recovery: Getting Back To a Face Care Regimen

Updated: 5 days ago

My facial care regimen has had its ups and downs over the years. I used to be really consistent with how I cared for my skin, specifically my face. Recently I have come to realize I was not doing a good job. Somewhere in between work, children, and being a wife I have completely forgot that skincare is self-care. When we don’t take care of ourselves wholly it shows, inside and out. So, with this acknowledgment, I have begun to hold myself accountable. I am restarting my face and skincare regimen; documenting my consistency to the world. I hope I am an inspiration for the next sister who fell off track when nourishing her skin.

My regimen is pretty basic, but I’ve learned over time you can always learn something new. My sister DeAnna has inspired me to do a little more when it comes to taking care of the outer layer of my body. Since I was a child I have used a washcloth to wash my face. Occasionally with soap, but not that often. Throughout the years this has changed off and on to using popular brands to scrub, cleanse, and moisturize. Shea Moisture's face care line is one of my favs.

I had the privilege of speaking with Kaylesia from Simply Lovely Solutions. She is a licensed esthetician. Check out her Instagram Facebook pages at the links. I wanted to know what a licensed esthetician recommended for DIY face care. Kaylesia is very knowledgeable about natural products to use on your skin without harmful ingredients that do more harm than good. The following are recommendations she gave for a face routine.

1. Exfoliate once a week.

2. Use a mask once a week. (Optional)

3. Wash once a day

4. Moisturize twice a day

5. Replace pillowcases once a week.

For my issues of discoloration, Kaylesia recommended using witch hazel as a natural astringent and toner. I did a Google search on the word astringent and Meriam Webster Dictionary states it causes the tightening of soft organic tissues. I also had to look up a toner because some people may not know what it is. A toner is an astringent liquid applied to the skin to reduce oiliness and improve its condition. Kaylesia also states witch hazel is a natural astringent and toner. It helps with discoloration and dryness. She suggested that those of us who are dealing with these issues should apply witch hazel to the t-zone of your face. The t-zone horizontally across your forehead and vertically from your forehead to chin. Not your lips. Use the witch hazel before applying your moisturizer. If you mix tea tree oil with your witch hazel it will stop in-grown hairs and acne.

One of my main questions for Kaylesia was, “What is the difference between a scrub and a mask?” This may seem like a dumb question to some but I kinda felt they were all the same before speaking to her. Kaylesia informed me that scrubs get off dead skin cells. According to Kids Health, we lose about 30,000 to 40,000 dead skin cells every minute. Kaylesia states masks detoxify, hydrate and balance our skin cells. This is good for me because I loveeeee bentonite clay masks. It is one of my favorite tools to help brighten and detox my face. I previously applied coconut oil as a daily moisturizer daily but no more. Kaylesia informed me that coconut oil clogs pores, further stating it should only be used on hair and body. I was so shocked by that, “I never knew!” (In my Tony Baker voice). If I didn’t want to use a moisturizer off the shelf she suggested shea butter as a good natural moisturizer. Speaking with her has motivated me to want to get it together. Follow Kaylesia on Instagram at leesilee. Kaylesia and her Mom Carmen will be at Regal Beauty on Saturday, January 11, 2020 from 6 - 9 pm.
